Workshop Description:

Join Craig Mallett and Frederik Beck for 3 nights of exploration into the weird and wonderful art of Physical Alchemy.  Each night will explore a particular topic with enough depth to give the participants plenty of material to digest and practice until next we meet. Done together, the 3 nights will showcase the underlying *current* that flows beneath many of the Physical Alchemy syllabuses - a current which we are calling Physical Repatterning Work.

Physical Repatterning Work is a *way* of teaching physical methods.  It is the art of using physical methods to produce emergent results across the whole spectrum of what a Human Being encompasses.

The guiding principles are explicitly not those of fitness, performance, health or wellness - though aspects of these may occur as ‘beneficial collateral’.  We train to free ourselves from the habitual patterns of motion, speech, behaviour, gesture and posture that bind our creative resources in stasis and prevent our authentic expression.  We use physical practices to shine a light into the dark, unmapped corners of our inner landscape. As our physical barriers dissolve we can repattern our fear of unknown - our allergy to mystery.

Below are the topics that will be explored on each evening. Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the evenings as their interest and time allows.

Evening 1 - Opening the Breath
The breath plays a critical role in our lives. It is often overlooked, or at best occasionally trained for performance purposes. On this evening we will go far beyond performance to explore the depths of the breathing apparatus and how it influences the body, emotions and mind. We will experience first hand the various ways it becomes restricted, and how to unlock these restrictions.

A smorgasbord of techniques will be on offer, each offering a lifetime of practice potential. Craig will introduce you to the powerful ‘Primordial Breathing’ methods of Da Xuan Daoism while Fred will be working on the breath within certain partner stretches. The stretches work to prevent our habitual mode of breathing and highlights the more subtle inhibitions of the diaphragm and other key structures.

Evening 2 - Body Awakening
The Body Awakening syllabus involves the examination and scrutiny of simple motions like lifting the arm, stepping or bending over. Craig will present exercises which make use of high repetitions combined with specific intention and cues to help us ‘bring to life’ key structures within the body that have gone dormant due to modern lifestyle habits.  As these structures splutter to life, Fred will present various partner-assisted Repatterning Stretching techniques to dissolve opposing tensions which inhibit the desired motion and sensations.

Evening 3 - Legs of the North
The martial artists of northern China were renowned for the strength and agility of their legs. On this evening Craig will present a unique way of training the legs through the use of stances and kicks of the northern Chinese martial arts. These methods will be used to probe and search for the hidden central axis.  Within it lies a potential for an extraordinarily robust and reliable structure and absolute ease of strength.  As we learn to approach and rely on the central axis, our protective tension will no longer be necessary and will begin to naturally fall away.

Complementing these practices, Fred will be sharing various techniques to unwarp the feet, calves and hips. Freeing the inauspiciously wound tissues of the lower body immediately deepens the feeling of the central axis being grounded and gives a taste of the sense of deep relaxation that comes from training the postures for a virtuous time period.

About the Presenters:

Craig is a principal member of Physical Alchemy [created by Dave Wardman]. He was subject to many of Dave’s early experiments, which broke him out of stasis and propelled him into becoming a dedicated student of the Da Xuan Daoist tradition. He teaches within Physical Alchemy and is also the instructor of the Da Xuan School in Sydney. Prior to this, he studied the traditional Chinese martial arts of Xin Yi Liu He Quan and Cha Quan under Dapeng Wang for a decade as well as many other modalities of movement, strength, flexibility and general physical development.  For more information see Craig's presenter's page.

Fred is currently tinkering with strength acquisition within a Physical Re-patterning Work framework as his ‘craft piece’. He has an extensive background in gymnastics, stretching and Western physical culture and holds a Master’s Degree in Medicine in his home country of Denmark. He is a teacher within Physical Alchemy and runs regular classes in Dublin. For more information see Fred's presenter's page.
